Chapter 5 - A New Mission

Three months had passed since the aborted wedding at Pine Crest Manor, but the aftershocks had completely reshaped our lives.
The story had naturally leaked to the local media, turning into a massive viral sensation across social media platforms and news outlets. Pamela Gable’s wealthy family had attempted to threaten legal action for defamation, but David Vance had promptly handed their corporate lawyers the 4K security footage and a signed child endangerment report filed with the Colorado Springs Police Department. Within twenty-four hours, Pamela’s high-society friends had completely cut ties with her, her engagement to a prominent Army officer was universally condemned, and she had quietly fled the state to escape the humiliation.
As for me, the Army administrative board had fully supported my actions, commending my swift protection of my dependent child. I had successfully requested a permanent reassignment to a desk and training command post at Fort Carson, drastically reducing my field deployments so I could be home every single night for dinner.
On a crisp, sunny Saturday afternoon, Hannah and I sat together on the front porch of our home, enjoying giant bowls of vanilla ice cream topped with an absurd amount of fresh strawberry preserves.
My secure cell phone buzzed on the wooden coffee table beside us. I glanced down at the screen, saw a routine administrative notification from base headquarters, and simply flipped the phone face down, ignoring it entirely. My duty to the military remained absolute, but I had finally learned the most vital lesson of my life: no mission, no rank, and no relationship would ever take precedence over protecting my daughter.
Hannah looked up from her bowl, her mouth stained red with strawberry filling, flashing a bright, gap-toothed smile that looked so much like her mother’s it made my heart ache with pure, unadulterated joy.
“Daddy?” she asked, swinging her legs over the edge of the porch chair.
“What is it, bug?” I smiled, wrapping my arm around her small shoulders and pulling her close.
“Do you think we'll ever need a stepmom again?”
I looked out across the sun-drenched lawn, watching the gentle Colorado breeze rustle through the pine trees, feeling a deep, unshakable peace settle into my soul.

“Not a chance, Hannah,” I replied, kissing the top of her dark hair. “It’s just you and me. And our team is already complete.”
Hannah beamed, leaning her head comfortably against my chest as we finished our ice cream together in the warm afternoon sun. The storm had finally passed, and the path ahead was clear, bright, and entirely our own.
