Chapter 4 - The Dismantling of Richard Sterling**

The realization hit me like a physical blow. The grandfather I had spent my entire life believing never cared enough to look for me—the legendary billionaire patriarch whispered about in financial tabloids—was sitting six inches away from me in a bulletproof SUV.
Before I could process the seismic shock, Alexander turned his attention back to the men waiting outside. He tapped his silver-tipped cane twice against the reinforced floorboards.
His chief of security stepped into the vehicle, handing Alexander a secure encrypted tablet.
“Sir, Vanguard Legal division is fully mobilized,” the chief reported crisp, crisp and efficient. “All federal and state injunctions have been filed. Richard Sterling’s corporate accounts have been frozen under suspicion of multi-state embezzlement and tax evasion. His penthouse, his luxury vehicles, and his firm’s assets are currently under court-ordered receivership pending federal audit.”
Richard, who had been listening from outside the open SUV door, went completely white. He grabbed the door handle, his voice cracking with sheer terror. “You can’t do that! I have legal protections! What authority do you—?”
Alexander finally lowered the tinted window of the SUV, turning his cold, merciless gaze upon my ex-husband.
“You spent three years abusing, starving, and legally terrorizing my only living granddaughter,” Alexander said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “You thought you destroyed her because she had no money and no last name to protect her. You didn't realize that the moment you signed those papers, you declared war on every asset, every judge, and every federal prosecutor this country has to offer.”
Richard dropped to his knees right there in the freezing rain, his expensive designer suit soaking up the dirty asphalt water. “Please... Mr. Vance, it was a mistake! It was just a messy divorce—!”
Alexander didn't even blink. He looked at Vanessa, who was desperately trying to unlatch the emerald necklace from her neck with shaking fingers.

“Take the necklace back,” Alexander instructed his guards. “And escort Miss Cole off the property. She’s trespassing on stolen family heirlooms.”
Within seconds, two massive guards opened the Mercedes door, plucked the diamond and emerald necklace directly from Vanessa’s throat, and pulled her weeping from the car while Richard knelt in the mud, utterly powerless, watching his entire empire dissolve into nothingness before the sun had even set.
